mitt romney's worst moment in the debate. what candy crowley did was laudable. what happens in this whole thing is that the truth becomes a casualty. we're supposed to make accusations back and forth to each other and nobody's supposed to correct. what candy crowley did, in the course of this, mitt romney doesn't want to be talking about libya, mitt romney wants to be talking about the economy. if you take a look at all of the polls on libya and foreign policy, going into this debate, the president has a big advantage. >> governor romney's campaign doesn't seem to agree with this. they keep pushing this. >> the reality is, he'll talk about the economy i'm quite confident on monday night. i mean, i know -- >> even though it's a foreign policy debate? >> yes. because we know the reason why is because we know from ronald reagan winning the cold war without firing a shot, with partners like pope john paul ii and margaret thatcher and others, what made that possible was a strong u.s. economy, the creation of 23 million jobs, the c

mitt romney debated against ted kennedy back in the '90s. he debated one on one when he ran for governor. he probably turned his campaign around when he ran for governor and won the governorship because of what happened in that debate. and listen to the republicans, don't listen to me because nobody's -- i'm, obviously, partisan. but just this morning on "morning joe," newt gingrich, who debated him many, many times, said that he got clobbered by him, that mitt romney, when he had to down in florida, literally turned things around, everybody saw that and knows that. mitt romney debated -- tim pawlenty said he's as good as a debater as there is, i'm telling you that because i debated him all the time. these are guys that ran against him. the fact is that mitt romney is very good debater. he's done a very good job. he's practiced and practiced and practiced and he's been flying around with, you know, the person playing obama on his airplane every minute. he's gone away and done five debates in 48 hours up in new hampshire or vermont or somewhe

there's problems with the way romney went through that debate. looked good but didn't exactly convey a lot of truth. your thoughts? >> that's exactly what democrats are saying. paul ryan was out today and says that he expects for the next month he's going to hear from the obama campaign that they are liars and you hear liberals picking up on that. again, to go to this point about "saturday night live," i think it underscores what people already saw from that debate, which is that president obama turned in a very poor performance. i thought that he would have been smart to go on to "saturday night live" and sort of lampoon himself. we saw him do that out west. i guess the "saturday night live" folks reached out to him and they both declined. i think it has been a right of passage in elections, going back to 2008 when mccain was on, obama was on, hillary clinton was on and sarah palin, too. it is part of our political discourse. it reinforces the narratives. i think "snl" has had problems portraying obama. they switched to a new guy. jay ferrel see

and to me, the surprising aspect of going back through mitt romney's debate tapes is he's actually better at this kind of performance than any of the other sort of performance arts of politics. i think he gave a good speech last night but he's not a born platform orator. but he is better as being able to advance attacks on the debate stage and rebut them if he's prepared than in other parts of his rhetorical arsenal. >> one of the interesting points you make is you could judge who wins the debate with the sound jo soundoff, the nonlingual cues. >> we would like to think the debates are something from logic class, where you're parsing carefully the arguments one way or the other. but in fact the moments that seem to matter, the times when we judge the people as people, we see how jfk looked versus richard nixon. we saw bill clinton and a tired-looking first president bush. al gore overhandling himself against the second george bush. >> james, during the republican primary debates, romney had a particularly awkward moment that you talked about in the piece. i want to play that clip now. >>
